The 72nd hole at Carnoustie is where this took place in 1999.

I still can't believe it happened, and I watched every crazy minute of it unfold.

golf channel has been showing a special about the '99 british open. both van de velde and his caddie spoke on camera about it. it was infuriating and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Three-shot lead at 18 and decided to play it aggressively. Why???

Aggressively is the wrong word, it suggests he was just going for it.  Aggressive was the driver on the tee, everything after that was as stupid as possible.  He probably could have had the same result if he just used his putter the entire hole.

my picks were Sergio and Stenson.

omw home to watch a bit. who's leading?

kevin kisner is in the lead, shooting a -5 66 today. a trio of others at -4. Tiger, JT, Rahm, and Rory at -2. Tiger playing the back nine right now - just had to play sideways outs of a fairway bunker on 10. Dustin Johnson has knocked two balls out of bounds today.

Who's X-man? I've never heard this on tv, other golf forums, or in any golf conversation?

Is this just another made up AO nickname?

Glad to see people can still copy and paste off Golf Digest.

Thanks for the summation. After you stated his name I wouldn't have put the accolades together.
