OC Register: Angels players objected to makeup game being scheduled for Thursday

ANAHEIM — Major League Baseball had the Angels and Minnesota Twins return to Angel Stadium on Thursday for a makeup game, over the objection of the Angels players.

Andrew Heaney, the Angels’ union representative, said on Thursday morning that the players don’t believe it’s fair to ask them to be at the ballpark for 26 straight days. He acknowledged, however, that they had no standing to veto the game because, according to the collective bargaining agreement, Wednesday counts as an off day since there was no game.

“Ultimately the decision for us is for our health and safety,” Heaney said. “That’s the reason these rules are in place. We just want to make sure that we get our off days when we need them and are not at the field for a month straight, playing 26 straight games.”

The Angels next off day is June 12, and they’ll fly to Tampa that day. Their next off day without traveling is June 24.

The situation began when a brief, but heavy, downpour just before the scheduled start of Wednesday’s series finale left the Angel Stadium field unplayable.

Although it did not rain again during the scheduled time of the game, Heaney and Manager Brad Ausmus both said they had no objection to the game being postponed.

“That outfield was not playable,” Ausmus said. “You can push the water around and move around some of the puddle, but if you walked anywhere in the outfield from 50 feet from the track to 20 feet from the dirt there was an inch of water.”

Heaney added: “It wasn’t safe for anybody on their team or our team.”

The dispute, however, was over when to reschedule the game. Angels players pushed for Aug. 26, which is also a mutual off day. The Twins would have been going from Minneapolis to Chicago, with a detour to Anaheim.

Heaney said it’s similar to a situation the Angels face on their next trip. They complete a series in Seattle on June 2, then play a makeup in Chicago the next day, followed by a home game the day after that.

“Not the greatest travel,” Heaney said, “so I think a lot of our guys on our side didn’t feel a ton of sympathy for them.”

In the end, Major League Baseball has the final say over when makeup games are played, and the players are powerless to object unless the scheduling creates a stretch of more than 20 games — not days at the ballpark — without a day off.

“It was a good conversation,” Heaney said. “It was civil. Obviously, having to play today is not ideal for us, but playing on (August) 26th wouldn’t have been ideal for them. We tried to find a way to mediate it, and this is what MLB wanted us to do.”

ADELL UPDATE

Angels top prospect Jo Adell is set to begin playing at Class-A Inland Empire, his first regular season action since suffering hamstring and ankle injuries during spring training.

Adell finished last season at Double-A, so presumably he’ll return to that level at some point. For now, the Angels are simply concerned with getting him back to 100 percent.

ALSO

Heaney threw a bullpen session before Thursday’s game. The Angels are still evaluating him to determine when he’ll be ready to join the rotation. They have an opening in the rotation on Sunday…

Luis Garcia was scheduled to pitch an inning for Inland Empire on Thursday. Garcia is on the injured list with a back issue.

UP NEXT

Oh spare me the whining. I don't feel bad at all for these multi-millionaires. This is the first time this has happened in a long time in Anaheim. The Twins players seemed just fine with it and are currently kicking your asses.

Fuck off dude.  It has nothing to do with being a kiss ass and it has to do with people complaining about the money they make.  It is simple jealousy.  You don’t like my opinion ignore me old man.

Jealous? That has nothing to do with it. The Twins players have no problem with it so the Angels whining makes them look weak and like crybabies.

How do we know they have no problem with it?

Because they didn't whine like the Angels did and are currently beating them by 12 runs.

Regardless of how much they make.  Just because they didn’t play yesterday they still all showed up to work.  It wasn’t an off day for them.  MLB is treating it as an off day.  This stuff is all collectively bargained.  MLB is basically using a loop hole to cheat them out of their off day.

It is shitty.

But they are millionaires so none of that matters to people who live pay check to pay check.  I guess.

They did get a day off. They didn't play a game yesterday. I have no idea why you feel the need to constantly have to stick up for everything and anything related to the Angels.

That isn’t a day off.  Ok, Saturday, go to work, hang out for 4-5 hours.  That is your day off.  I am defending against really stupid arguments, in this case it has to do with your jealousy of what they make.
